Alaa Aql is a cassation, administrative, and supreme constitutional court lawyer, a legal advisor specializing in intellectual property disputes, and a founding partner of Intellectual Property Gateway (IP GATE), the first Egyptian law firm specializing in intellectual property disputes and services. He is registered with the Egyptian Bar Association, a patent and trademark registration agent, and a member of the Arab Lawyers Union and the Law Institute of the General Bar Association.
Alaa works as a legal advisor in intellectual property disputes for several well-known law firms and intellectual property offices. He participated in teaching intellectual property rights (trademarks, models, and industrial designs) in the first training course in Egypt combining information technology and intellectual property for legal professionals, held at the Information Technology Institute (ITI), affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Alaa has handled numerous intellectual property cases and legal registrations related to trademarks and patents, including the protection of the Valentino brand, and representing international companies such as Johnson, Fuji, Denso, Hyundai, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals (Japan), and the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (owner of the 2022 FIFA World Cup logo). He has also represented national pharmaceutical trademarks competing with international companies like Pfizer (Lipitor), Sanofi Aventis (Flagyl), and Boehringer Ingelheim (Germany). He also took part in the well-known case against the producers of the Arabic version of "Suits" for copyright infringement.
He has handled hundreds of appeals and lawsuits before the State Council courts (Administrative and Supreme Administrative Courts) and the economic courts regarding IP matters. Alaa holds a Bachelor of Laws from Ain Shams University, class of May 1999, with a “Good” cumulative grade. He has participated in many legal and IP-related conferences since 2002.
Alaa received numerous certificates of appreciation, particularly for his efforts regarding the TRIPS Agreement's legal impact on the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry from the Egyptian Pharmacists Syndicate.
He has contributed to legal awareness on trademark protection through training lectures, publishing legal articles on the IP Gate website, and preparing several academic research papers including:
